FFION HAF -SCOTT has helped take care of her mother because she was four years old – now, with the possibility of going away to the university, she is nervous.

Ketleen Jones from llangyfelach in Swansey helps to take care of her two brothers who live with autism.
She expects to study education and psychology with special needs at the university, but the idea of taking care of the university may feel heavy.
“My part finds a little guilty because I have a lot of responsibilities, like I want to stay there for my mother and my brothers,” she said.
“But at the same time I know that I need to give my education and make my career.”
The 17-year-old also said that isolation was a big issue, “Many people do not pay attention to how difficult it is sometimes”.
She wants to see that young carers have access to groups for weekly chat and catch-up to help reduce this feeling.
A 2024 UCAS Report The experience of young carers in education in the UK found that 69% were unaware of the support available in universities or college.

Amy Kribub, an access coordinator at Swanasi University, is part of the team running outreach sessions in schools and colleges and is a free summer school for those who represent less in the university including young carers.
He admitted that he still had to work to help the youth with caring responsibilities, as well as informed them about the support available.
He said: “Many young people do not really feel that they can be a young careful. So they do all kinds of care responsibilities, but they have not officially been identified as a young career.
“So it is really important to raise awareness for us and show people that support is out of there and is one of the best things to recognize ourselves.”
What support is available for young carers at the university?
