The video released by the New York Immigration alliance on Tuesday gives a first look inside some holding cells of the federal immigration offices in New York City.
It shows men sleeping on the floor on a thin thermal blanket. At one point, a man is heard saying, “Look how they are … like dogs here.”
There are reports that the lights are placed around the clock and about 30 people share the same toilets.
Zone Paul Alkivar de La Cruz was held in convenience for several days before being sent to Jackson Parish Correctional Center in Louisiana. His wife, Samara de la Cruz, told CBS News that he was fed only one sandwich and water bottle every day in the convenience of New York.
Tisia McLaglin, a spokesman of the Department of Homeland Security, says the prisoners were organized “briefly” in the convenience of New York City, and “no claim that the situation of congestion or subprime in snow facilities is clearly false.”
Samara said that her husband was running away from harassment in Ecuador and it would not be safe for her to return there. Samara said, “He was not worthy of any of it. He did. He ensured that he follows all the laws. He went to all his immigration courts. He was never arrested. He had never had a criminal record,” said Samara.
He is an American citizen. Both were married in May. Samara was pregnant at the time of her husband’s arrest, but a miscarriage occurred, which she blames on her husband’s custody.
“It was a way, uh, very painful to me,” he said.
But even though Joan was taken to a separate feature, Samara says that she is afraid of her husband’s life, saying that she has been denied life -saving medicine for the situation of liver at both detention centers.
McLaglin has stated that all snow prisoners are provided with proper food and medical treatment.
“He said he said that he requested to go to the hospital several times. He just ignored him as if he turned his back and pretended as he did not say anything,” Samara told CBS News.
She said that despite the threat of being given to the Ecuador, she is more afraid of being in custody facility.
“Because he is suffering there. You know, he is in a lot of pain. If they continue what they are doing and not giving him what he wants, he is going to die there,” he said.
