Burned Debmanman Junior at White House
President Donald Trump has canceled the secret service details of former Vice President Kamala Harris, seven months after his unsuccessful President’s campaign.
By law, the US Secret Service provides six months of security to the former Vice-President and their families after the termination of their terms.
However, the term can be extended, which was allegedly performed by former President Joe Biden before leaving the post.
The move has already created controversy, both California Gavner Gavin Newsome and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called it politically inspired.
What do we know here?
Why did Biden increase his safety?
So far, neither Biden nor Harris compulsorily commented on the reasons for increasing their safety of six months. CNN reported that Biden extended it for one year with an first unknown instructions before leaving the office.
From a legal point of view, Biden was within his rights to do so.
According to a law enacted in 2008, Secret Service can provide protection to any child under 16 years of age after leaving the office for former vice -presidents, their spouse and any child.
While the law states that security should not expand more than six months, the Secretary of Homeland Security has the right to order “temporary protection” in situations where “information or conditions warns such security.”
Ronald Casler, a writer specialized on secret service, told the BBC that “If you separate political implications, it is just a standard exercise.”
Does Harris face risks?
Sources familiar with the current situation have told the BBC American news partner CBS that recently a threat assessment did not make anything dangerous for warrants to increase Harris’s security system.
But some of the Harris team were reportedly concerned that to serve as the first woman and color person and to serve as a vice -president and a controversial, emotionally charged election, as a candidate, she faced additional threats.
Several threats against Harris were made public during his time in the office and as a presidential candidate in 2024.
For example, for example, in 2024 many people were arrested and accused for online threats against him, and in 2021, a woman from Florida convicted threatening against Harris and admitted that she had sent videos to her imprisoned husband in which she displayed firearms and said that “hit” could be done within 50 days.
In March, after leaving Harris post, a Florida man was also arrested even after threatening to kill him with a sniper rifle.
However, Mr. Casler said that Harris “did not move as much as I can tell compared to other politicians.
“I think this is a sound decision from the secret service,” he said.
A few weeks before the removal of the expansion of Harris, he is scheduled to start a multi-city tour to promote his book, 107 days, focused on his short-term, unsuccessful presidential dialect.
According to Mr. Caslers, such an operation already carried forward an overburdan and underumman secret service. In September, the agency is also responsible for international dignitaries and VIPs at the United Nations General Assembly at New York.
“A dozen secret service vehicles will be required across the country to walk on their big tour,” he said. “This is a big groove on the service.”
Which elements of security are being taken away?
The Secret Service Protection is spread beyond the agents that run a security, and protect them and their immediate family.
Additionally, Secret service is tasked to secure homes, such as Harris Los Angeles residence, which includes the installation of security systems and alarms. The agents identify pre-and-a-hand and monitor the potential threats, in which it is sent electronically or through social media.
It is not clear how much those security costs, and the secret service has not published that figure.
Private security for famous celebrities, VIPs and business leaders can easily reach millions of dollars per year, depending on the required hazards and levels of safety.
For example, Meta paid more than $ 23m (£ 17m) for Mark Zuckerberg’s personal protection in 2023, including $ 9.4m in direct security costs.
Is this a political vengeance from Trump?
After removing the expansion of Harris, some of his colleagues and the political opponents of Trump immediately stated the characteristic of the move to be politically motivated by the President.
Trump already removed the secret service protection for the former Allies and Enemies, including Hunter and Ashley Biden, the children of the former President; And Anthony Faussi, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infections.
Many former Trump officials and colleagues had also canceled their security, including the former state Mike Pompeo and former secretary of John Bolton, a former National Security Advisor who became a vocal critic.
“The safety of our public authorities should never be subject to irregular, reputable political impulses,” told CNN, a California governor Gavin Newsom spokesman Bob Sallade told CNN.
Mr. Casler said that the probability of “seriously underumman” secret service is re -starting its efforts on more immediate threats, such as Trump and his administration members face.
“President Trump may be excited to do so,” he said. “But real sounds are practical reasons”.
It is believed that only another former vice -president, Dick Cheney, is believed to have increased the secret service safety after the then President Barack Obama left the office.
Are the rules different for former presidents?
Unlike previous vice presidents, people who serve as President have security for life, until they choose.
In 1994 – to save costs – 10 years after leaving the Congress post, she went to limit protection for the former President and his spouse.
But in 2013, President Obama again signed a law, making lifetime protection mandatory. Today, it applies to George W Bush, Bill Clinton, Obama and Biden.
Only one President, Richard Nixon, has been selected to pursue the security introduced in 1985.
At that time, members of his employees told the New York Times that they did so to save the agency’s money.
