Jacob Misiorowski was as surprised as anyone by his MLB All-Star selection.
The 6-foot-7 rookie right-hander for the Milwaukee Brewers figured he would spend the break kicking back, ordering in some Chinese food, and doing “absolutely nothing.”
Yet there he was in Atlanta — selected as a replacement after just five big-league starts, in a choice that ruffled some feathers — where his stuff was on full display. Nine pitches over 100 mph and this slider that wowed both dugouts.
But the All-Star nod also allowed him to discuss some of his biggest hobbies – collecting Pokémon and sports cards.
Before the game, I caught up with the 23-year-old standout to chat about his rapid rise, what it’s like facing the stars he grew up watching, his hobbies off the field and more.
“I’ve been into Pokémon forever,” he told me. “Getting back into sports cards, just being up here and seeing all the guys is fun.”
How’d you get into Pokémon?
Oh, I was young. I remember, I played like Pokémon Red and Green, that young, like on the Game Boy. But I’ve always loved it.
Do you still play?
I still play. I got a Nintendo Switch, I got the Switch 2, so I’m going to play the new one when it comes out in October or something. But, it’s been a lot of fun.
How’s your Pokémon card collection?
It’s up there. It’s pretty good.
What’s your best or favorite card?
Probably the base set shadowless Charizard…but it’s beat [up]Or new origin.
I saw that you were lugia inside your suit jacket on the red carpet. Do you have that real card?
I have a card. I want the first version, but the first version is like a crazy, crazy zodiac.
Jacob in the all-star game was a good sign for his Pokémon collection in Misiorowski’s suit jacket.
Do you sell the card? Hold on them?
I just hold on them. I am trying to get the goods like a master set, so just find the card slowly. It is very fun.
How will you finish in sports cards?
I was in the sports card, but it was not heavy. I was more in Pokémon. But then I got my first tops deal, and I was so, ‘It’s sweet. Can I collect my card? ‘So when I really grew in it. One of my cards stupid was like cheap, I will just buy them all. The first set is like one thing, you can call it a rainbow. I am talking with the man who has one now, so I am getting closer.
Do you have a favorite card in your collection?
With sports card, I have the entire printing plate line of my first Boman. So, like, my first card, I have a complete printing plate, every card made on those plates.
How will you get that?
EBay! (Laughing)
Did you have a fight?
Oh yes Every day, we will see a pop up and like my mother, ‘Oh, look, one and one pop up.’ Although we will stay late, it was bidding it for the last second. Had fun.
When will you get?
I draft that first year.
What are other games you other than baseball?
I originally played everything, I played basketball, I played football, I played football. You are a child, you are just running around. But right now I am the biggest game, football. Basball and football, they are two.
How soon did you realize that this was the right path?
Very early. (Laughing)
In what position was you in football? Quarterback?
I had a tight end.
How will you describe your right day in Milwauki?
It was kept back very back. Breakfast in my kitchen, find an activity with me and my girlfriend and perhaps a good dinner.
Do you have a favorite place? Or type of recipes?
I like a steakhouse or Italian place. We have tried something.
I know that the pitchers can be started about their day. Is there any pregem food that you are especially?
This is very common. Eat what you can do. I am very bad about eating, so it is difficult.
Is there anything that you cannot oppose?
I don’t think I have anything that if it is placed in front of me, I have to eat it.
Who would you say that this journey has been the most impressive for you?
In life, perhaps my girlfriend. She has been there through the whole thing. We started dating high school, so I think it is one of the things she is stuck with me through thick and thin. going [through junior college]It was going there for two years.
Life is a bit easy now.
It is very easy now. It has been good.
How will family and friends describe you?
Happy, easy.
Think that it helps you manage the ups and downs of this job?
Absolutely. It is one of the things you have to go with just the eb and flow.
As a sports card collector, now all these all-stars are here, how fast has all this happened?
No, it is wild. I do not even know how to think about it. My jersey is on the table, and I have just seen both Shohi (Ohtani) and Freddy Freeman. It is like crazy.
You have already faced both those people. Did you have any StarStroke moment on the all-star or the mound till now?
Certainly, like, my first beginning. We played Cardinals and Nolan Aranado was there, and I was, ‘Holy S —. This is really that. ,
Was it all spoiled after that first game?
It wears very quickly when they slap the same, and like you, ‘Oh, S —, we go here.’
