For people suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the situation may worsen in the weekend.
After investigating the change in severity, researchers at the University of Flinders in Australia found that the Symptoms of the OSA were clearly more prominent at the end of the week.
The study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine analyzed sleep data from more than 70,000 users of an under-matter sleep monitor, which tracked the OSA seriousness every day of the week.

Data was collected for the duration of sleep, sleep time and apnea-hipopenia index (AHI), which is a measure of seriousness of sleep apnea.

The OSA severity “enlarged” on the weekend “, compared to Wednesday, jumped 18% more on Saturday. The overall severity score was 6% higher on the weekend than the average week days.
This growth was found in men and more than 60 participants.

Researchers wrote in the study, “This real-world study, which evaluated day-to-day variations in OSA’s severity in over 70,000 users, has led to a global increase in the severity of OSA on weekend, an event that we have called ‘social apnea’,” researchers have written in the study.
Weekend Catch-up Sleep and “Social Jetlag”-which can be defined as a misleading between someone’s natural circadian rhythm and their social clock-OSA obstacles on the vertical increased by 47% and 38% respectively.
Various factors, including smoking and alcohol consumption, can affect the severity of the OSA. (Istock)
The authors commented, “It is in line with previous conclusions, showing that irregular sleep is associated with more obstacles of OSA.” “Since OSA is usually more severe during REM sleep, weekend catch-up sleep and social jetlag are likely to increase the severity of OSA.”

Authors also indicated other factors that may affect OSA’s severity, including alcohol consumption and increase in smoking.
“The novel identified in this study requires further research to better understand the causes and mechanisms behind the social apnea incident,” he said.

Sleep Expert Wendy Toxel, PhD – a Rand Corporation’s senior behavioral specialist and licensed clinical psychologists who were not involved in the study – also reacted to the findings in an interview with Fox News Digital.
Trachele confirmed, “This recent study offers a novel insight into day-day variability of obstructive sleep apnea severity, referring to the authors as ‘social apnea’ effects, where the OSA deteriorated on the weekend,” Truxel confirmed.

Trachele agreed that the severity of the OSA is likely to be due to the ups and downs “normal weekend behavior” such as an increase in alcohol consumption, leaving CPAP treatment and “holding” on sleep.
“All these can disrupt sleep and circadian rhythm and can increase the severity of apnea,” she said.

These findings suggest that single-night sleep test made at the end of the week can reduce the severity of the OSA according to the specialist.
Trachele advised, “OSA persons should try to maintain a continuous sleep-wake schedule throughout the week, limit alcohol intake and use CPAP treatment prescribed every night of the week.”
