The US Navy will fall from 11 to 10 aircraft carriers for nearly a year, when the USS Nimitz will be decorated next year, as recent budget documents suggest that a new carrier will be delayed by its original delivery date.
According to the budget estimates of the Financial Year (FY) 2026 of the Defense Department, Newport News Shipbuilders were received by USS John F by July 2025. Kennedy (CVN-79) was expected to be transported to the Navy, but it has shifted in March 2027.
“CVN79 delivery date was transferred from July 2025 to March 2027 to March 2027 (initial approval TBD) to complete advanced arrest gear (AAG) certification and continuous advanced arms lift (AWE) to complete the work,” FY 2026 Shipbuilding Budget Reeds.
Both are advanced arrest gear certification and advanced arms lift work systems that were included in the Ford class carrier.

Newport News Shipbuilding of HII in Virginia told USNI News This is taking lessons learned and applying them with new vessels in their classes.
“The construction of John F. Kennedy (CVN79) was quite advanced when many Ford lessons were realized, preventing the timely implementation of the lessons learned for Kennedy,” Todd Korilo, a HII company spokesman told the publication. “Conversely, Enterprise (CVN80) and Doris Miller (CVN 81) are capable of inclusion, availing and capitalizing the first Ford lessons learned in the construction process.”
In addition, there was a delivery of the USS Enterprise (CVN-80), which was expected to be distributed in September 2029, but has been pushed back by July 2030.

The footnots of the document read, “The date of CVN 80 delivery was transferred from September 2029 to July 203 due to the availability of materials and delay in the industry/supply chain performance.”
The USNI reported that the Navy has originally planned to pursue a dual phase distribution approach for Kennedy, but has since turned into single-phase distribution, which has added two additional years of work to the vessel design and construction contract.
Under the new schemes, Kennedy will be designed to handle the fifth generation F -35C joint strike fighter Lightning II and will be prepared with the new enterprise air monitoring radar, stated by USNI.

Officials originally thought that the dual -stage approach would save the Navy money when it came for construction costs and Nimitz reduced downtime between decomination and Kennedy delivery.
These delays come in the form of USS Nimitz, which is decrected.
Commissioned on 3 May 1975, Nimitz is the oldest active aircraft carrier in the US Navy.
It is currently on its final sea voyage in the Middle East, as Nimitz is to be decorated in 2026.

Deployment is important as Nimitz was also deployed in 1980 when its helicopter was part of the unsuccessful American attempt known as Operation Eagle Claw to save American hostages held at the US Embassy in Tehran. The US has been in a shadow war against Iran since then.
