Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made the use of UMAND app for generation and activation of Universal Account Numbers (UAN) starting from August 1, 2025. The new system takes advantage of Aadhaar-based face authentication technology (FAT) to simplify and secure the process.
According to the official circular, all new UAN allocation will now be made through the Umang app using especially using fat. The move aims to eliminate errors and ensure seamless onboarding for new and current members of EPFO.
Who needs to use the UMANG app?
Any employee who wants:
-Do a new uan
-Ach activate an existing UAN
Record EPFO through biometric face authentication
Now the UMANG (Unified Mobile Apps for New-Ej Governance) app will be required to be used. Aadhaar Face RD app should also be installed to complete the process.
However, Nepal, Bhutan and international staff workers are free from this requirement. Their UANs can still be generated through their employers.

How to generate a new UAN through Umang app
-Close Ang App and select “UAN allocation and activation”
Complete your Aadhaar Number and Linked Mobile Number
-Prowide consent and tap on “Send OTP”
– Verify OTP and proceed with face scan authentication
-If an existing UAN is found, the system will automatically generate and send it through SMS to its registered number.
How to activate the existing UAN
-So -Open Umang and Choose “UAN Activation”
-So, Aadhaar Number and Mobile Number
Complete consent and OTP verification
Using Aadhaar Face RD app
-You will receive a confirmation SMS with your temporary password, and the UAN will be active
For pre -active UAN
If you have already activated your UAN, but need to update the records through biometric authentication:
-Use the option “already active UAN’s face authentication” option on the Umung app
Inform the face scan to update your EPFO database photo and address
