Sir Kir Stmper has said that Britain has started returning to migrants coming in small boats within a week under a new pilot scheme.
Under the “One in, One Out” deal, some arrival will be detained and will return to France. In return, the UK would accept a similar number of asylum seekers, under security checks and provided that they have not tried to illegally enter the UK.
Speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Minister said that the plan suggests that the attempt to cross the channel in small boats would be “meaningless”.
He did not confirm how many people would be returned or accepted during the pilot.
Sir Kir said that the pilot will help people to “break the model of smugglers” and it will be provoked when successful.
The migrants accepted by the UK would require a connection to the UK, such as a family tie.
In a statement Issued After the press conference, the government stated that the agreement would be signed “subjected to complete transparency and comprehension with the European Union member states to complete the pre -legal investigation”.
Macron said that the scheme will have a “preventive effect” beyond the numbers returned.
He said that Brexit had made it difficult for Britain to deal with illegal stay, arguing that the British were “sold a lie … which is the problem Europe”.
During the press conference, the two leaders also announced that their countries would be:
- Coordinate your atomic preventive
- Strengthen cooperation on supercomputer and AI
- “Speed up and access” collaboration on anti-ship missiles.
Some details of the deal, including how the UK will decide who to accept who to accept and who to send France back, is not clear. There may also be legal challenges on the selection process.
Other European Union countries – such as Spain and Italy – may worry that migrants may be returned. Under the Rules of the European Union, individuals sent back to France must first claim asylum in the European country, which they arrive, often live on the border of the Mediterranean Sea.
Announcing the pilot, Sir Kir said: “I know some people will still ask, why should we take someone – so address me directly.
“We accept real refuge seekers because it is true that we provide a shelter in the strict needs.
“But there is something else, something more practical that we cannot solve only a challenge such as stopping boats by acting alone and telling our colleagues that we will not play the ball.”
Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Chris Filp said the deal will “return to one of every 17 illegal migrants”.
“94% of illegal migrants allowing to live will not make any difference and will not have any effect.”
Reform UK leader Nigel Faraj said that the crossing is “a national security emergency”.
He said, “French clearly returned our money to us,” he said in a context. For payment made by UK To support French policing efforts.
He said he did not believe that the pilot would work, saying: “If we also try to deport people in the channel, we will directly attend the European conference on human rights.”
Both labor and previous orthodox governments are struggling to stem the numbers coming in the UK in both small boats.
The conservatives had proposed to send arrival in Rwanda, but the scheme was delayed by legal challenges. The general election was called before implementing.
As Prime Minister, one of the first acts of Sir Kir was to scrap the plan, called it a gimmick.
He said that his government would focus instead of dealing with smuggling gangs organizing crossings.
In the first half of this year, there continued to increase the number of 20,000 people in the UK as the number of people arrived – 2024 increased by 48% in the same time period. More than 170,000 people have come into small boats since the first recorded data in 2018.
