In collaboration with Caulis-MHI, Commuter Experience and Streamline Navigation, Dubai’s Rhods and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the network-wide upgrade of signs at all Dubai Metro and tram stations. The initiative introduces clear direction – provision, better visibility, and etiquette reminder – beautified movement, more clarity and better use of specified passenger areas.
Comprehensive signage upgrade in metro and tram networks
The broad signage revamp spreads both the stations on red and green metro lines, as well as the Dubai tram network. Under the leadership of the RTA’s Rail Agency, the project included the installation and replacement of around 9,000 wafinding signals, which required a total of 11,000 work hours from the technical teams.Major areas of reform include:
- Update entry and exit signage
- Station entrance and new signage on exit
- Exit signs are now highlighted with bright yellow boxes to improve visibility for passengers.
The purpose of these enhancers is to simplify the navigation process, especially for new users and during the high-foot period, by offering a consistent visual guide in all stations.
Clear visual guidance on platforms and floors
Upgrade features to improve flow during boarding and transfer and reduce confusion:
- Platform directional indicators who clearly point to specific train lines
- Floor sticker strategically directed foot traffic and guided passengers efficiently on its intended platforms
These elements are designed to reduce station congestion, reduce hesitation and support rapid passenger movement throughout the network.
Promoting Public transport etiquette
The RTA also introduced visual reminders that focus on maintaining humble and proper behavior within the metro and tram stations. These behavior messages appear as stickers in station waiting areas and platforms, encouraging:
- Honorable conversation with fellow passengers
- Awareness about personal space
- General courtesy when using public transport
These signs are part of a broad push to increase comfort and improve the overall travel experience for all passengers.
Clear designation of special cabins
To protect the comfort of passengers by using women’s and children’s cabins and gold class cabins, the RTA has replaced the previous floor marks with more visible signage.Updates include:
- Large pink and gold boards clearly ‘labeled women and children’ and ‘labeled’ and ‘
Golden class cabin , - Major placements to reduce the unauthorized use of these areas
This change ensures that cabins are used properly, more respectable and systematic environment for those they intend to serve.
Integrated message in all RTA channels
In addition to physical signage, the updated vefinding system is fully integrated into the RTA’s broad communication ecosystem, which ensures stability in guidance:
- Train and platform audio announcements
- RTA’s smart mobile application
- Social media platform
This coordinated rollout guarantees that passengers receive the same clear, accessory information, whether they interact with the transport system – in fact, digitally or audible.
