The Trump administration has planned to cut millions in security funding for Washington, DC, yet the President has also directed the federal law enforcement to “completely out of control” crime to increase its presence in the city.
In a grant notice posted last week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said that DC’s Urban Security Fund would get a shortage of $ 25.2 million, 44% year-on-year.
The Homeland Security Department, which oversees FEMA, said on Friday that it turned many cities to correspond to the “current danger landscape”. Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Jersey City also cut their safety funds, but DC reduction was the largest for any urban area that received funds from the previous financial year program.
DHS has seen a change for “9/11 like 9/11, simple, small -scale attacks from coordinated attacks, which increases the vulnerability of soft goals and crowded places in urban areas.”

Violent crimes in DC fell to 35% between 2023 and 2024, the US Attorney’s office for DC said in December, stating that there were 3,388 incidents last year, compared to 5,215 incidents a year ago.
Last year, the crimes that saw significant drops included murder, which was 30%below, sexual abuse was 22%and 27%attacked with a dangerous weapon. The robbery and theft fell slightly.
Federal funding includes security requirements in the National Capital Region, including DC and nearby cities in Maryland and Virginia.
FEMA has $ 553.5 million to spend to support cities across the US to promote security. It is not clear how much the total security budget of the National Capital Region comes from that program.

On Thursday, Trump directed the federal law enforcement to increase its presence in the nation’s capital, which included a link to violent offenses, including an incident including former Dogi employee Edward Koristine, “Big Balls” surname, was beaten on the streets of the city earlier this week.
“Washington, Crime in DC, is completely out of control,” Trump has written on the truth social. “Local ‘youth’ and gang members, some are only 14, 15, and 16 years old, randomly attacking, shooting Maging, Mamming, and innocent citizens, knowing at the same time knowing that they will be released almost immediately. They are not afraid of law enforcement because they know that nothing happens to them, but it is going to happen now!”

The President said that the nation’s capital “should be safe, clean and beautiful for all Americans and, importantly, to see the world.”
“If DC does not get his work together, and quickly, we will have no option but to take the federal control of the city, and how it should be run to run this city, and put criminals in notice that they are no longer away from it,” they continued. “Perhaps this should have been done long ago, so this incredible young man, and so many other people did not go through the horrors of violent crime.”
