Only 250 National Guard members will remain in Los Angeles after the Pentagon announced on Thursday, which will cancel the deployment of additional soldiers as anti -ice protests in the city have calmed down.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement to the Associated Press that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered 1,350 National Guard members to leave the city, while one hundred federal personnel and property would be protected.
In June, 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines were sent to LA to gain control over riots against immigration raids in the city. Despite the objections of state and local leaders, including the Democratic village Gavin Newsom, the federal step was taken, who filed a lawsuit in an attempt to end the federal deployment.
About two weeks ago, half of the National Guard soldiers was withdrawn and Marine was ordered to be released a few days later.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass wrote on X on Wednesday night that the departure of more soldiers was “another win for Los Angeles,” adding: “We will continue this pressure until all the soldiers are out of LA”
“These soldiers have family and jobs,” he wrote in a separate X post on Thursday. “They could respond to the actual threat or help communities prepare for fire threats. Instead, they were forced to protect two office buildings for months.”

National Guard soldiers were mostly protecting two federal buildings in the city – ice office and detention facility downtown. Some federal agents are also saving, while they carry out immigration raids.
California leaders argued that federal deployment was unnecessary and tension in the city had increased as protests continued against the exile of the Trump administration and immigration in the region. While the protest is still happening, most of them are small and scattered.

Newsom said in a statement that President Donald Trump’s “political theater backfined”.
Newsom said, “Women and men of our army are more worth than being used as a props in the federal government’s promotional machine.”

California filed a lawsuit to prevent the federal deployment of the National Guard, the Newsom in June argued that the Trump administration violated the law when it deployed soldiers. Newsom also asked the judge to help the soldiers to stop the immigration raid.
A lower court initially ordered Trump to return the control of the National Guard in Newsom, but the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals later temporarily blocked the order.
