The country’s Health Ministry has said that three people have died and 103 others have been injured due to a train, while on the route of Egyptian capital Cairo, the country’s health ministry has said.
Officials said the train was traveling from the northern coastal city of Marsa Matriha, when seven of its vehicles came out of the tracks on Saturday, two vehicles were overturned, the officials said.
Health Minister Dr. Khalid Abdul Ghaffer offered his condolences and prayers to the families of the victims, and wished them a fast recovery.
The Ministry of Transport and the National Railway Authority of Egypt (ENRA) are investigating the cause of the accident, which is not clear.
ENRA said in a statement that anyone responsible for derailing will be punished.
It states that technical staff and equipment has been sent to clean the debris and restore services as soon as possible.
Speaking on behalf of the Egyptian Transport Ministry, it also presented its condolences to the families of those killed.
Officials said the incident took place on the stretch of the track between Fauka and Jalal stations in Marsa Matriha region.
Dr. Abdul Ghaffer visited an accident scene to monitor the emergency response, and later visited the hospital injured.
According to the Ministry of Health, all the injured were taken to two local hospitals through ambulances.
It states that the bodies of three people who were now in custody of public prosecutors were in custody.
Accidents on Egypt’s railway network are often caused by poor maintenance and lack of investment.
In 2002, one of the deadliest train disasters occurred when more than 370 people died after a fire in the train traveling south of Cairo.
