Thousands of Tibetan Buddhists joined the Himalayan city of Dharmashala on Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama.
Cruel monsoon rains did not dismiss the spirits because the Tibetan spiritual leaders appeared in traditional clothes and a flowing yellow wrapped, smiling and walking with the help of two monks.
Hiltop temples echoed with mantras, while dance mandals performed with cymbals and bagpipes.
The Indian minister, Hollywood actor Richard Gere and thousands of devotees, for a long time, gathered to honor the exiled leader, as a lawyer for peace.
Gere took the podium with a festive on his face, to declare “what was” joyful, joyful day “to declare” this “to celebrate this extraordinary life. He then embraced the Dalai Lama, who said “the avatar of completely selflessness”, and kissed his hand.
Sunday’s celebration marked the culmination of a week of long -life prayers that began on Monday, which was aligned with his birthday on the Tibetan lunar calendar.
At a ceremony on Saturday, the Dalai Lama assured the followers of his “great physical position” and said that he would live for one and 40 years beyond his previous prediction – 130 – two decades.
Although he said that he usually avoids birthday celebrations, the Dalai Lama thanked the followers for using the opportunity to reflect on peace and compassion of mind. He referred to himself as a “ordinary Buddhist monk” and said that he had no regrets because he saw his life on 90.
“While it is important to work for physical development, it is important to focus on achieving peace of mind through a good heart cultivation and through being kind, not only near and dear people, but also to all,” he said in his birthday message.
This week, the Dalai Lama confirmed the plans for a successor, relaxing the long -standing speculation on whether the 600 -year -old organization would end with him.
According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Dalai Lama is given rebirth after death – a process is deeply inherent in spiritual customs, not political rights.
Since running away from Chinese rule in 1959, the Dalai Lama has earlier stated that his rebirth will be in “free world”, which means outside China.
But Beijing, who considers him a separatist, rapidly rejected his right to determine a successor.
Chinese officials emphasize that any succession should follow Chinese laws, religious rituals and historical conferences – and eventually approved by the government in Beijing.
The declaration has ruled out the apprehensions among the Tibetans in exile that China would attempt to name a successor to tighten Tibet control, the area that captured in 1950 and ruled since then.
The Dalai Lama has long directed Tibetan Pravasi in a struggle for autonomy and resistance to Chinese domination.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted his birthday on Sunday, called him “a permanent symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline”.
Former US President Barack Obama also greeted him, “90 -year -old I know” and thanked him for his friendship.
