The UK, France and Germany have begun the process of restoring the United Nations restrictions on Iran – under the 2015 deal – as tension on Iran’s nuclear program increases once again.
This step will trigger a so -called snapback mechanism, resulting in a refund of restrictions in 30 days.
In the three countries, the 2015 deal, the participants warned two weeks ago that they were ready to do so until Iran agreed to the “diplomatic solution” by the end of August.
The talks on their nuclear program between Iran and the United States have not resumed since June when the US bombed the Iranian nuclear sites and Iran stopped un-supported inspectors from reaching their facilities.
The Iran and the United Nations -backed deal between Iran and the United States, UK, France, Germany, China and the European Union were removed for years in exchange for Iran’s nuclear program.
But Donald Trump launched the deal after taking out the US and re-starting nuclear sanctions during his first term in 2018. Iran carried forward its nuclear activities in response, increasing the crisis afresh.
Western powers and the global nuclear body International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says they are not convinced that Iran’s nuclear program has purely peaceful objectives. Iran firmly insists that it is not looking for nuclear weapons, and that its nuclear program is only a citizen.
