Openai has allegedly started testing local pricing for Chatgpt in India, making users able to pay for the first time in Indian rupees. According to a report by Moneycontrol, India has now joined this pilot program in select markets such as the UK and parts of Europe, which aims to make the payment simple and more accessible to pay for the country’s rapidly growing user base.
Local pricing for plus, pro and team plans
As part of the pilot rollout, the price of the Chatgpt Plus plan is 1,999 per month (including GST), on high-end Pro scheme 19,900 per month, and team plans 2,099 per month per month. Previously, Indian users had to pay in US dollars – $ 20 (surrounding) 1,750 for plus), $ 200 (surrounding) 17,500 for Pro), and $ 30 (near) 2,600) per seat for team plan.
Mobile finder: iPhone 17 Air is expected to be launched in India next month
The move comes shortly after the launch of the GPT-5, the most advanced model of Openai, which provides extended performance in 12 Indian languages. This localization is expected to make the service more relevant to the Indian market.
Possible cheap tier incoming
According to reports, Openai may soon present a budget -friendly scheme called Chatgate Go, potentially at a price 399 per month. This tier can appeal to casual users, students and customers for the first time who are demanding AI aid without committing premium schemes.
During his visit to India in February 2025, the major demands raised with Openai CEO Sam Altman were local pricing. Startup founders and developers argued that dollar-based pricing created a barrier to adoption. Srinivas Narayanan, vice -president of Openai’s Engineering, had earlier told Moneycontrol that the company was working to make its equipment more economical for Indian developers, aligning its global access efforts.
India’s growing AI market
India has now become Openai’s second largest market outside the United States, and Altman has suggested that it may soon overtake the US in the use of Chatgpt. The pilot pricing strategy reflects the increasing importance of the stage in the country’s AI adoption curve.
However, Openai faced hard competition. Perplexity AI Bharti Airtel’s 360 million customers are providing one year membership for their premium tier, while Google is providing students of Indian college one year free access to their AI tools.
