Ranchi, President Draupadi Murmu will attend the 45th convocation of IIT in Dhanbad on Friday.
On Thursday, Murmu attended the inaugural convocation of AIIMS Deogeh, which marked the first MBBS batch of MBBS batch of the institute admitted in 2019.
Officials said that during the convocation at IIT in Dhanbad, Murmu would provide the President’s gold medal to Priyashu Sharma, a top ranked B.Tech graduate in computer science and engineering.
He said that a total of 1,880 students of 2024-25 batch would be awarded degrees in various subjects, which mark their formal induction in the league of skilled IIT alumni.
He said that a total of 37 students would get gold medals, 35 silver and 21 will get sponsored medals and awards.
Governor Santosh Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren are also expected to attend the event besides Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Another official said, “The convocation holds special significance as it is a central part of the centenary celebrations of the institute, which symbolizes 100 years unwavering dedication for nation-building through science, technology and education”, said another officer.
The institute, established on 9 December 1926, started its journey as the Indian School of Mines and Applied Geology.
Modeling was done at the Royal School of Mines in London, the institute was established with a specific objective of training India’s fast -growing mining industry with a specific objective.
The foundation of the institute was laid under the visionary guidance of the first principal, David Pennman, and was formally inaugurated by the then Viceroy Lord Irwin of India.
Murmu will be the second President to participate in a convocation in IIT-IIT-Im, Dhanbad.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee received the 36th convocation of the institute on May 10, 2014 as the chief guest.
The President reached Ranchi on Thursday evening and spent the night in Raj Bhavan.
