Margerita, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the names of the people who were evicted from the encroached land would be removed from the list of voters from the list where they were living illegally.
Talking to reporters on the occasion of an event in Margerita in Tinsukia, Sarma claimed that the state’s previous generation failed to “save the lower and Central Assam”, but in a clear context for a large population of Bengali-moving Muslims in those areas, impulses and efforts to “save” should be “saved”.
“If someone is evacuated from a place, his name cannot be in the voter list of that place. With eviction, the names will be removed from the voter list,” he said.
He said, “His modus operandi now has to enter the upper and northern Assam. Our effort is to ensure that, like the lower and Central Assam, these have not gone away. We and our previous generations fail to save the lower and central Assam, but now we are trying to save the upper and northern Assam,” he said.
Sarma had earlier said that July 15, 1,19,548 bigha land was removed from encroachment after taking over as Chief Minister in May 2021, affecting about 50,000 people.
The Chief Minister had earlier claimed that the state was watching the “attack” from the people of the “one religion”, who are allegedly encroaching on the land to change their demographics.
Asked if his government is planning any eviction campaign in Margerita, Sarma said that the process has already started.
He said, “I have discussed with the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. Those who have come from outside and there is no link here, those people will be evicted. The process has started,” he said.
He claimed that “10,000–12,000 unidentified people have gradually entered Margerita”, which is located at the East-East-East of the upper Assam.
On objections to providing land rights in the tribal areas of Margerita, Sarma said that Moun, Motk, Ahom, Gorkha, Coach-Rajbongshi and other such communities have been given ‘lease’ because they have been living here for a long time and “they are not our enemies”.
He said that people of these communities will be provided land rights at places where they have been living for a long time.
