A senior official said that the ‘Dhakpatti’ area in Nagaon Town has changed the name of ‘Roopkonwar Chowk’ from Tuesday to ‘Roopakonwar Chowk’ following the instructions of Chief Minister Himant Biswa Sarma.
Jyoti Prasad Aggarwala, a famous playwright, lyricist, poet and freedom fighter of Assam, is popularly called ‘Roopkonwar’. He is also considered the father of Assamese cinema as he made the first two feature films in the state. Aggarwala died in 1951 at the age of 47.
Dhakpatti got its name from laborers brought from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh in the 19th century.
Addressing a press conference here, Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma formally declared the name of Dhakapatti in the center of Nagaon city in Central Assam, which was up to Roopkonar Chowk as per the collective decision of the respected local citizens.
“As directed by Assam CM and consulted from eminent personalities, the decision to change the name of Dhakapatti region as Roopkonwar Chowk was taken in memory of Assam’s cultural icon as Assam,” said Sharma.
He said that the age-old road area starting from Sayar Store Point from RD Store Point has been re-resurrected as Rupkonwar Chowk.
DC said, “The name of the street area started from the sire store towards the Greater Barabazar area, it is also named as ‘Barbazar’ instead of Dhakpatti.”
After signing the Yandbo Treaty with the Burmese Empire in 1826, the British brought some skilled laborers for baking, sewing, binding and other works from Dhaka in Jorhat city of Assam.
Later, those laborers of Dhaka were brought to Nagaon city for similar purposes, and thus came to the name ‘Dhakpatti’.
Sharma claimed, “People of every region of life in Nagaon district have welcomed the government’s decision to change the name of the said region after proud Roopkonwar Jyoti Prasad Aggarwala instead of Bangladesh’s capital.
He demanded public cooperation with the said decision and requested the merchants of the area to re -write the name of ‘Roopconwar Chowk’ in the signboard of commercial establishments in the area within the next one month.
“I also request the traders to write the name as Barabazar instead of the signingboard in their business installations, which is located in the middle of the Sire Store Point,” the official said.
He also said that after a detailed discussion with the Nagaon Municipal Board and the concerned departments, a circle will be constructed at the newly designated Roopkonwar Chowk point.
