In a literary event, a speech by a Tamil lyricist and poet Vairamthu on Lord Ram has led to a political controversy, accusing him of hurting Hindu sentiments.
Speaking at an event, where he received an award in the name of medieval Tamil poet Kambar, who wrote the Tamil version of the epic Ramayana, Vairamuthu said that Lord Rama “lost his mind after separating from his wife, deity Sita,”.
Vairamuthu said, “After separation from Sita, Rama lost his mind, not knowing what he was doing. Under the IPC (Indian Penal Code) Section 84, an act committed by a person due to mental insults or dissatisfaction of the mind is not formed in an crime.”
“Kamban would not have known the law, but he knew the society and the human mind,” he said at the event with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin in appearance.
He said, “Ram is completely acquitted, forgiven – Ram has been made a human, and Kamban Divya,” he said.
Reacting to the comment, BJP leader CR Kesavan posted on X: “Vairamuthu Ramasamy is a disgusting repetition criminal, when it comes to insulting the holy Hindu deities and misusing Hinduism. Now Veramuthu has irony that his name is unacceptable in his name.”
