Sportscar manufacturer Lotus has to cut 550 jobs at his UK headquarters in Norfolk, BBC understands.
Lotus, which is based on Hethel near Vayedam, first denied reports that it was to close its factory there and set up a new plant in the United States.
In June, it was said “Actively discovered options in the global market” but remained “committed to the UK”.
However, confirming the first job cuts, the company stated that the decision followed “the business objectives of Lotus cars to suit the current market conditions”.
In a statement, it said: “We believe that it is necessary for the company to secure a permanent future in today’s rapidly developed motor vehicle environment, which is seeing uncertainty with rapid change in global policies including tariffs.
“The brand is perfectly committed to the UK, and the Norfolk Lotus’ sports car, motor) and engineering consultation will remain home to operating.
“It is actively discovering future development opportunities to diversify the business models of lotus cars, including third-party manufacturing.”
The South Norfolk Council said that all this can “help and support 550 people who lose their jobs”.
Council leader Daniel Elmer said: “We will continue to work with Lotus, but our priority should now be those who are losing their jobs, and we will work with the County Council so that the support package is available.
“We will also talk to the government to see that they can help us ensure that there is a future for this prestigious brand in South Norfolk.”
Company Was established in the early 1950s Engineer moved by Colin Chapman and Hethel in the 1960s.
Labor MP Ben Goldsboro, for South Norfolk, said it was a “very bad day” for the county.
He said, “The terrible news has been lost today in the case of 550 jobs, but the worst situation has been saved which is a complete and completely closed of Lotus UK,” he said.
“This is a punch in the stomach for every person who has heard this news this morning.”
