New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday noted recent students suicides at Greater Noida and IIT Kharagpur, and sought a detailed report from both institutions. The bench noticed that some “seriously wrong with the educational system” that pushes students to such extreme stages. It also warned that if the FIR was not filed on time, contempt proceedings against the university management would be initiated.The court has asked both universities to register their reactions and posted the case for hearing next Monday.At Sharda University, 21 -year -old dental student Jyoti Jongda was found hanging in her hostel room on 19 July. In a suicide note, he blamed two faculty members for mental harassment. Her father alleged in the FIR that her daughter was “personally tortured” and university staff tried to destroy the evidence. The police have arrested two teachers – Mahinder and Shayari – and an investigation is going on.Meanwhile, on 18 July, Ritam Mondal, a fourth year mechanical engineering student in IIT Kharagpur, was found hanging in his hostel room. It marked such a fourth incident in the campus this year. In the recent records of Mondal, the institute, which does not indicate mental health issues, has formed a fact-khoj committee and promised full cooperation with investigation.
