Loan Lok Sabha MP from Gangtok, Sikkim, Indra Hang Subba, Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari called in New Delhi on Friday and submitted a memorandum demanding immediate action on flood-prone National Highway 10, which connects the Himalayan state to the rest of the country.
According to a statement issued by his office, the MP said that the highway was in a delicate position due to stretch, landslides and floods with the Teesta River in Kalimpong district of West Bengal, especially when the river overflows when the river overflows.
He said that geomorphological changes were required as the Teesta River has made significant changes after the devastating flash flood of October 2023, resulting in an increase in the river due to the statement of silt, boulder and debris.
Subba also said that many sections of the highway, especially between Sevok and Meli, are now prone to continuous floods, which endanger the lives and qualities of residents and travelers.
The MP called for immediate technical evaluation and stabilization work along with immediate flood sprinkler measures, including flood -pronounced stretch of NH -10 and river training, embankment strengthening and extended drainage infrastructure.
He also said that in coordination with relevant hydrological agencies, long -term management of silt and debris in the Testa River Basin was required.
Speaking on long -term solutions, the MP emphasized the need to construct an alternative Greenfield highway between Sevok and Melly on the banks of the Teesta River, in which the new Greenfield Projects can be prevented from affecting connectivity to establish the weaker sections of the weaker sections, as well as the weakest parts of NH -10 with the establishment of temporary high corridors.
The statement said that Gadkari instructed the officials and engineers of the ministry to take appropriate action on the concerns and demands raised by the Sikkim MP.
