Samik Bhattacharya will be the new president of West Bengal BJP, as he was the only candidate to file nomination.
A senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya is ready to become the new president of the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party, as no other candidate nomination was filed for the post till the time limit on Wednesday.
Communal Bhattacharya presented his nomination papers at the party’s office in Salt Lake in the afternoon, along with the outgoing state president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of the Opposition at the State Assembly Suvedu Adhikari.
Who is the Samik Bhattacharya?
- Samik Bhattacharya is an old Rashturia Swamsevak Sangh worker. He tasted his first election success in 2014 when the BJP had no seat in the Bengal Legislative Assembly.
- He first won the Basirhat South Assembly seat for a saffron camp in a bipol.
- BJP leaders said that Bhattacharya’s climb significantly mark the importance of RSS in Bengal, which is in the run-up in the 2026 assembly elections.
- A senior BJP leader told Hindustan Times that the central leadership chose Bhattacharya due to its strong oratory skills and widespread acceptance between both old and new BJP workers. With Bhattacharya as President, rivalry between various groups and some state leaders is likely to end.
- Bhattacharya will take over the reins of the state unit at a critical turn along with the 2026 assembly elections.
- The major challenges of Bhattacharya will include ensuring better coordination between the organizational and legislative wings of the party and united various factions within the state BJP.
- Another major task for him is facing TMC’s frequent effort to brand the BJP as “anti-Bengalis” and a “external party”, a story that has received traction in the previous elections.
- Political observers feel that it should be seen how Bhattacharya is known for his vocal communication style and long association with BJP and RSS, navigating these obstacles.
In the 2021 assembly elections, BJP won 77 seats. Since then, Tally has fallen below 65, with 12 seats either lost, which are due to the sub-by-by-bai due to the death of the MLA or the defect for the ruling TMC.
