A prisoner who had a rare form of pneumonia, after “poor and unsafe” nursing died and assessed and treated with him, a report stated in a report.
42 -year -old Mark Uzel was accused of violent crimes and was on remand at HMP Bristol when he became unwell on Christmas on the eve of 2022. He died four days later in the hospital.
Jails and probation Lokpal found that Mr. Uzel reported blood cough, but the agency’s nurse assessed him, he did not record his comments or did not mention him during the morning handover.
A spokesperson of the jail service said that he had “significantly improved” and took action to ensure the decisions of the employees to make a decision.
The report said that Mr. Uzel was the seventh prisoner in the Bristol, who died since December 2019, and since then there have been seven deaths.
He first became unwell in the early hours of 24 December 2022 and was evaluated by Nurse A.
Mr. Uzel remained unwell and his symptoms deteriorated. At around 09:00 GMT, another nurse reviewed it and found that he needed to evaluate a significant care team in the hospital.
He also informed the head of the healthcare jail about recording or handing over his assessment about the failure of nurse A.
Mr. Uzel did not recover and an inquiry in June concluded that he died for natural reasons, adding delay in hospital entry increased the speed and severity of the disease and accelerated his death.
The report states that the action of Nurse A is investigated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
The report stated that Nurse A failed to join the ombudsman’s investigation initially and retained that he had made a statement to the prison healthcare chief who disputed it.
In a statement presented to the clinical reviewer, Nurse A said that Mr. Uzel was alert and said that if his symptoms remain, he advised him to contact the jail healthcare.
The report said: “He also said that he had talked about Mr. Uzel during the handover to Healthcare Day employees, but we did not find any evidence to confirm it.”
The report recommended that the agency employees are “clinically capable” that can be assigned the role of lead emergency nurse and that interactions and decisions are improved.
It also said that when the drug should be improved in removing, Mr. Uzel was given an over-the-counter pain reliever thrice from December 19-20, but the reason for this was not recorded.
In 2023, a harmful report at HMP Bristol stated that “old and infallible” problems were, due to which HM Chief Inspector Charlie Taylor described it as “one of the most unsafe jails in the country”.
A spokesperson of HM Jail Service said: “We accepted all the recommendations of the Lokpal and took action in 2023 to record important decisions to the employees and preserve important documents after death in custody.
“Since 2023, HMP Bristol has made significant improvements including improvement in rehabilitation to promote security, expand support services and reduce rehabilitation and secure gel.”
