In April 2020, Mencell and Moore took a group, consisting of a cenus city police chief and a SWAT officer, and faced a aunt attached to a long line at a dive site. A longline is a type of deep sea fishing gear with hooks with hooks for fishing.
“It was just another simple day on water,” Mainell said. He said, “I had been traveling there for years and nothing happened. I saw something red in the distance thinking, you know, maybe it was garbage or diver,” he said. “We saw that it was connected to a line, which is when we started calling the law enforcement.”
Unknown to this, the longline was related to a legally sanctioned National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shark research operations, Mansell and their team acted fast and cut the line. He left 19 sharks back into the sea.
“I didn’t know that this could be possible, you know that you could be a permit to kill all these sharks,” he said, seeing that he had called Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) and NOAA’s hotline before making decisions.
“In our mind, the whole time, we thought we are exposing a crime instead of committing crime,” he said.

That trust was quickly taken off. A few days later, Mainell said they received a call during dinner.
“I just felt as if my world stopped, my heart drowned,” he said. “We called [law enforcement]We did everything we could do. ,
Despite their outreach for law enforcement, both divers were accused and convicted. While they avoided the time of prison, they were ordered to pay $ 3,343.72 in restoration, and the convicts of Gundagardi prevented them from voting, owning firearms and traveling independently.
“The judge made a comment, and he appreciated us for our dedication [the] Environment, “He said.” He said that what my lawyer said was probably the lowest punishment. ,
Looking back, Maintsell said that if he knows the law around legal sharks, he would work differently.
“Knowing what I know now, I will completely separate things completely,” he said. “But if I did not know that there were permits for this, I don’t think I will change anything … When you think you are doing the right thing, you think you are doing the right thing.”

“We were really surprised to get forgiveness,” he said. “It was not really discussed by my lawyers because it was still below the line.”
A turn came when the case went into the US Court of Appeal for the 11th circuit and Judge Barbara Lago confirmed what the Mansel had considered during the legal process.
“He originally said … it should never have gone ahead … He has never crossed a criminal who has asked the enforcement to tell what they are doing in real time,” he said.
The opinion arrived at the promotional Libeterian Kato Institute, which published an article, which eventually attracted the attention of the White House.
“The White House actually called our lawyers and said they were looking at it and asked for more information,” he said. “It was really good because our lawyer called us that the White House was in front of him and was watching it.”

Mansell knew about his forgiveness while riding on an aircraft, shared that he was left “speechless” From the news,
“I was getting a call from my lawyer and I replied, and he says,” Okay, I have received good news for you. You have just received a full presidential forgiveness. ” I was speechless.
Mainell deeply thanked the White House and Trump for forgiveness.
“I can say that you are thank. And I hope you know, perhaps in the name of shark, we can all take a look at what is happening and say what is happening [legal killings of sharks] Should not be in Florida. ,
“I am just very grateful. I have said that you thank you at every step. The words can’t explain it,” he said. “I know that the White House took a look at it and he decided that it is worth it. And I got the signature of President Trump.”
Although hooliganism remains technically on records, Manshell said that practical implications of forgiveness allow them to continue their work.
He said, “Gundagardi has been completely forgiven, so now I can vote, and I am the master of a gun,” he said. “And most importantly, it is getting a travel visa for my work in protection.”

Asked how his approach to the government and justice developed, Mainales admitted, “First, I was so, I lost a lot of faith in it. I felt that it is just unfair, but now I am grateful for the fixed process.”
“I have learned a lot through this process,” he said. “I have always considered myself a citizen who follows a law, someone who does not break the law and I respect law enforcement and commercial fishermen.”
He said, “I came into this political battle between commercial fisheries and shark diving tourism and it is difficult, but now I am on the other side,” he said. “At first I lost a lot of confidence in the criminal justice system and now, a bit of that belief in the justice system is restored. There are lots of checks and balances for a reason.”

“The matter should never have been filed,” Ian Goldstein said in a statement. “These gentlemen made an honest mistake and were trying to save the shark, which they considered as an illegal long fishing setup. I could not think of two persons that are more worthy of the presidency.”
