In 2023, two students who died in Nottingham attacks have been awarded posthumous degrees by Nottingham University.
Grace O’Mali-Kumar and Barnabi Weber, both 19, were stabbed in a series of attacks on 13 June 2023, which also claimed the life of the school’s acting Ian Quotes.
17-year-old Barnabi’s younger brother Charlie accepted the degree of history in his honor on Monday, while Ms. O’Mali-Kumar was awarded the Bachelor of Medical Science on Thursday.
Prior to the ceremony, Charlie said it was a “monumental moment” for the family.
He said, “We know how much he steals this time to get his degree, if he was still here,” he said.
“It means to come here, and I feel honored to be able to collect my brother’s degree.”
Charlie thanked the university and the people of Nottingham for supporting the family, and said that his brother had a huge connection with the city.
He said, “He loved it – from social life to his educationists, he was obsessed with Nottingham – it was a real work for my parents to bring him back,” he said.
“The city was immediately there for us – they did not know us, they never met us, they never knew our names, they did not even meet Barni, but they were there for us all the time.”
At the degree ceremony on Monday, Mr. Weber’s friends and family paid tribute.
Abi Brent, who had just graduated with a degree of geography, knew Barnbi that he was in school in Somerset, before he re -joined Nottingham while studying in Nottingham.
He said that it was “Bitwatch” to participate in this program.
“We are here to support Charlie and family,” he said.
“It is such a difficult day, but it is also such a cute day to celebrate Barney’s graduation.
“Although he is not here, it is good to be able to support the family, and it is great that the university has also honored Barney.”
‘Pal of pride’
Politics and International Relations Graduated Oli Chaplin, 22, met Mr. Weber through the university’s cricket team.
He said that posthumous degree is “a great gesture” to show his friend’s permanent heritage.
“This is a sign that he has not forgotten not only by his friends, but by the institutions he did,” he said.
“This is a really proud moment for his family, but also for his friends – obviously he cannot be with us, but it is a great day to respect his memory.”
