The Legislative Council’s Karnataka Member (MLC) SL Bhojgowda made a shocking claim on the floor of the House, saying that he received poison from 2,500 stray dogs to address the issue.
According to JDS MLC, dogs were buried in coconut gardens and coffee estates. His statement came a few days after India’s Supreme Court issued an order to remove stray dogs from areas in Delhi NCR.
“To address the danger of stray dogs, 2,500 dogs were killed and buried in coconut gardens and coffee estates,” Gowda claimed that the dogs were fed poison meat.
Bhojgowda said that the threat of stray dog affects the children of the poor, while it cannot affect the children of ministers, judges and MLAs.
He said, “Children of judges, ministers and legislators who travel by cars and other vehicles may not be affected. But children of poor families who go to school, face the danger of attacking by stray dogs.
Supreme Court order on stray dogs in Delhi NCR
On Monday, the Supreme Court ordered that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR be picked up within eight weeks and kept in shelters made by appropriate authorities.
A bench by Justice JB Pardwala and R Mahadevan, listening to a petition registered at the “dangerous and harassing” growth in stray dog attacks, ordered contempt action against any person or organization that tries to obstruct the authorities to exclude the capture drive.
The bench said, “Go round all stray dogs in all areas including areas on the outskirts of Delhi, and transfer them to any other place … whether it is fruitless or sterilized, society should feel free and safe. You should not have any stray dogs to roam.”
It also directed that officers in Delhi-NCR should install a helpline to register complaints of all dog bite, with a “within four hours” the aggressive animal was raised.
