New Delhi: The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) has suggested priority to women in the allocation of deceased donors organs. In a letter to the states/UTS, the apex authority has stated to regulate organ donations and transplants in the country that provision should be made to identify additional points for female recipients of donor organs to address gender inequality. Studies have shown that when women make a large percentage of donors, they get less organs than men. Director of Noto Dr. Anil Kumar recently told TOI, “Women are equally weak when it comes to ending organ failure due to the disease, and it is important that the organs are available for the operation of a transplant -either through a living donor or dead donor -” Director of Noto Dr. Anil Kumar recently told TOI.Noto’s letter sent on August 2, called for additional measures on the eve of organ donation day, such as the deceased donors found a dignified funeral. Many states have said that the District Magistrate concerned, or another senior officials attend the funeral. The NOTTO instruction suggests that they should require it by prioritizing the relatives of a deceased donor in the allocation of organs.According to the annual report of organ donation in India in 2024-25, India released on the eve of organ donation, in 2024–25, close to 19,000 organ transplants. Of these, the 3,403 (17%) transplant was performed by using organs obtained from dead donors or obtained from individuals declared brain.
