Under a plan agreed by President Donald Trump and NATO chief Mark Rutte, the Netherlands will become the first European state to provide cash for Ukraine to buy US-made weapons.
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brakelmann on Monday announced that his nation would contribute € 500 million ($ 576 million) to NATO’s priority Ukraine requirements list (PURL).
Brakelmann said that the funding will go to the Patriot system and missiles, which is a mobile surface-to-air interceptor.
Developed in the 1980s and still considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the US, Patriot aircraft, strategic ballistic missiles and cruise missiles can thwart attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodimier Zelancesi thanked the Netherlands for funding on X.
“Ukraine, and thus the whole of Europe, will be better preserved from Russian terror,” he wrote.
He said, “I am honestly grateful to the Netherlands for his sufficient contribution to strengthen Ukraine’s air shield,” he said.
Rute also thanked the Netherlands and encouraged other European NATO colleagues to follow the suit.
“This is about achieving Ukraine, which now needs to defend itself against Russian aggression,” he said in a statement.

“I have written to all NATO colleagues, urged them to contribute to this burden-distribution initiative, and I soon expect more important announcements from other colleagues.”
The Netherlands have emerged as one of the Ukraine’s top defense donors, since the onset of Russia’s full -scale invasion in 2022, it has been close to € 3 billion in military aid. Dutch support includes tanks, F -16 training and now, contributions towards strategic air defense platforms such as Patriot.
