The MLB spokesperson told CBS News on Wednesday that Pavol will serve as hideouts in Saturday’s doublehead in Trust Park and The Plate on Sunday. She is also going to keep a plate on Sunday.

“Once I started umpiring, I was so, ‘this is for me,” Pavol said last year working in the Florida Grapefruit League. “I can’t explain it. It is just in my DNA.”

Pavol first attended MLB’s umpire camps, a developmental initiative organized across the country for potential umpires of the league, MLB spokesperson Mike Tivan told CBS News.
Following the camps, Pavol became a minor league umpire in 2016, and she would be making history as the first female umpire to work in a regular MLB season game.
MLB’s move comes after 28 years when the gender barrier for sports authorities broke into NBA, after 10 years after finishing NFL and three years after the men’s Football World Cup employed a female referee. The NHL still does not have a female referee.
In 2024, Pavol became the first woman of the Umpire Big League Spring Training Games since Riya Cortesio in 2007. Cortacio spent nine years in a minor league, including the last five in the Double-A Southern League, then released after the 2007 season.

Pavol West West was an all-set softball and football player in New Jersey for three sessions in each game at West Milford High School. She went to Hofstra on a softball scholarship and became a three-time all-conference pick and was in the 2001 USA Baseball Women’s National Baseball Team.
Pavol received a master’s degree and was living in the Binghmton region of New York and was taking teachers certification classes at Elmira College, while still playing on the side.
“I was not really satisfied,” she said last year. “Come out of a huge competitive career, just playing at the local level, I was not getting my fix. And I remember I was looking at the umpire and liking, I think it’s it. I had to go for it.”
After NCAA Softball from 2010–16, he attended the MLB Umpire Triarout Camp in 2015, was invited to the Ompire Training Academy in Vero Beach, Florida and offered a job in the Gulf Coast League in 2016.

The MLB has 76 full-time employees umpires and uses Phil-in on the crew for injuries and openings made by holidays.
