New York City Democratic Meorel Nominee Zoharan Mamdani said on Monday that social workers and other non-police professionals such as “transit ambassadors” should handle some 911 calls.
The status of a case on law enforcement and public safety took the center stage after a large -scale shooting in Manhattan on 28 July, killing four people, including a police officer. In the light of tragic shooting, Mamdani’s critics began to bang him for the previous comments for blaming the police in New York City.
Mamdani was once again asked about his views for crime and public safety at a press conference with Sen Elizabeth Warren, D-Mas, when he offered his views.
“I have said time and time again that whatever decision I take in relation to NYPD will work backwards from the result of public safety and public safety, we know, this is a one who comes from listening to the authorities himself,” Mamdani said on Monday.

Self-known socialist candidate cited “forced overtime” as a major reason for the decision of several police officers of New York City, given that NYPD officers receive around 200,000 emergency calls related to a mental health crisis every year.
“The fact is that every year we ask them to take additional responsibilities – we are making them more and more difficult for them to respond to a lot of responsibilities, which attract him for a job at first,” Mammadani argued. “New Yorkers have the right concern around public safety, and I want to empower police officers to respond to serious crime and to appoint mental health professionals to mental health professionals.”

To further explain the issue, Mammadani pointed to a fictional event involving a distressed tourist, forcing the arguments to use resources to respond to these calls, but it may end if the city was to appoint “transit ambassadors”.
“This forced overtime is something we can expect. It is not surprising. It is so important to ask that we are making these officers,” Mamdani told reporters, in response to questions about their proposal to help reduce law enforce overtime.
“When we ensure that it is not an officer, who has to stand in the middle of the Times Square Subway Station and answer a question from a tourist about which the exit works, and which escalators can take, and what line they are running with or without delay, but that we have a really transit ambassador, such as the official can focus on serious crime, it starts to focus on the time of that type of time Which reduces the type of time that reduces that type of balloon. “

Meanwhile, during a podcast appearance in 2020, the same year Mammadani called his now infamous social media post to define NYPD, the socialist candidate for the mayor also suggested that the police should not respond to domestic violence calls.
“If someone is alive, going through domestic violence -there are many different, different conditions that will be better handed over by trained people to deal with specific situations, opposite a person with a gun, which has generally received limited amounts of training,” Mamdani said at that time.
