New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday arrested Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, in connection with the alleged multi-gruesome liquor scam in the state. It comes a few hours after the central agency searched the senior Congress leader at its Bhilai residence in the premises. After the raid, Bhupesh Baghel’s office posted on X, “Ed has come. Today is the last day of the assembly session. The issue of trees being cut in Tamanar for Adani was to be raised today.” Sir “has sent ED to Bhilai Niwas.”The probing agency has alleged that a cartel, who included government officials, politicians and liquor businessmen, operated a plan, which was collected for about Rs 2,161 crore from the sale of liquor in Chhattisgarh between 2019 and 2022.The alleged scam included the manipulation of the liquor supply chain, which controls the sale and distribution of liquor through the shops operated by the Cartel government.A part of the liquor sold was not recorded in official accounts, and bribes were allegedly collected from suppliers to allow its sale outside the legal system. The investigation is based on the report of the earlier Income Tax Department, which flagged off irregularities in the liquor trade of the state.Earlier, the ED had arrested several prominent accused, including IAS officer Anil Tutja and liquor businessman Anwar Dheber, brothers of Raipur Mayor. The agency has also conducted several raids on politicians and bureaucrats associated with the former Congress -led government in Chhattisgarh.(This is a developing story)
