A continuous mesh and part of the transport program may be part of the salvation of the eels species caught in the lower laf erne.
Commercial eel-phishing has been done Suspended on Laf Neg – 70 miles from Laf Erne – But government supported protection work Continues elsewhere.
The European eel has been severely dismissed as the severely endangered – it ranks a level below the preservation condition given to pandas, rhinoceros and tigers.
“Since 1983, the level of the eel in our water has dropped dramatically, and they are now around 10% that they were before 1983,” Dr. Derek Evans, a senior fisheries scientist Dr. Derek Evans scientist Dr. Derek Evans The Agri-Food and Biosyinses Institute (AFBI) said.
“So we have seen a decline of 90% in the number of eels in our rivers and lakes.”
This year, he and the team in AFBI, who conduct research for agriculture, environment and rural affairs (DAERA), have seen the “notable increase” at all three monitored index sites in Northern Ireland and have seen “remarkable increase” – Laf Neg, Laf Erne and Strongford Laf.
Throughout Europe, the eel is managed under the terms of the regional eel management plans.
As the only commercial eel enterprise from the UK, Laf Neg Fisherie’s plan requires 200 tonnes of silver eals to return to the sea annually.
But this conservation target has been remembered for the last three years, reviewing the Neagh Bann Eel Management Plan to address it.
In their life cycle, Els travel as young glass eels or alvars from Sargaso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean, so that European spend years in maturing in European freshwater lakes before returning to areas for breeding in Atlantic.
On Lower Laf Erne, the Trap and Transport Scheme put some pre -eel fishermen on water in 2010 after local fisheries, when management plans and related protection limits were introduced to protect the species.
Due to the danger generated by hydroelectric stations within the Erne system, the eel is caught and moved to the road to the road for release.
“We still know very little, what happens in his ocean stay, very little about it,” Dr. Evans said.
“And we still want to see breeding in Sargaso Sagar.”
The assessment catch has long, mature women, whose age is around 18.
The eel is seduced using clove oil so that Dr. Evans and their PhD student groups can easily measure them.
Dr. Evans said, “Now we know that the length of the eel above 70 cm and about a million eggs, so that a million-egg woman is going into the sea.”
But he said that there is more need of population to help fix it.
“The current advice of the International Council of International Council of sea exploration says that, in relation to fishing opportunities, there is not a really an opportunity to fish for the eel.
“And their advice for the entire stock is that when it comes to eel, there should be zero catch in all life stages so that more silver eals can be provided and to increase the amount of sponners available in Sargaso, swim in the sea.”
Several PhDs are funded by the dera, with the consumption of this year focus on nature-based solutions in Laf Neg.
One of them is completing his work on the pike in the lake.
The Craig McCoarery has asked the fishing fleet to complete the questionnaire so that the hunter can help the fish distribution scientifically documents.
Another student, Niamh Heatley, will start his research this year how to protect the eel and support the future of inland fisheries.
Laf Neg Matsya is Europe’s largest commercial wild eel fishery.
It is several million for the local economy and is responsible for more than 15% of Europe’s wild eel catches.
But No brown eel will be caught in 2025 after notification of quality issues.
AFBI scientists usually examine hundreds of samples from Matsya’s grip, but they were offered just 20 for cancellation of the weather.
Dr. He was one of the Evans team who investigated him.
He said, “We found that fat content would be what we would have found earlier; the contents of the stomach, as well as nothing uncommon, keeping in mind that we had seen only 20 eals, as the opposite of 400,” he said.
Like many other freshwater bodies including Loof Erne, once again Blue-green algal experience.
But there is no scientific relationship between algae and eel or fish so far.
Dr. Evans have not been called to death or fishing any fish in three -year -old Algle Blooms.
He said, “And I have not seen any record of fish at this stage dead or dying.”
