A convicted killer was jailed for 10 and a half years after an order for a gun attack on the jail guard.
Robert Patterson, 45, was serving life in HMP Edinburgh, when he claimed to have a heart attack after swallowing cocaine bags.
The guard suspected an attempt to escape and delayed him from going to the hospital in November 2022, which Patterson believed that his life was at risk.
In the High Court in Edinburgh, Patterson accepted the order ordering a handgun and gunpowderBefore the conspiracy was thwarted by the police.
While sentencing, Lord Haror told him that the jail officer had worked “fully appropriately”.
He said: “There was nothing in his behavior, which was needed to avenge.”
The court heard that Patterson claimed that he was having a heart attack, an ambulance reached the jail, which was not ordered by the jail staff.
The guard suspected the prisoner as he had planned an attempt to escape in 2012 in which he was being taken to the hospital.
The officer removed a SIM card from a mobile phone to Patterson and swallowed it.
He agreed with paramedics to monitor Patterson in jail before being sent hours after Edinburgh Royal Information.
Prosecutor Alan Cameron Casey said Patterson later complained that Medix had told him that there was a danger of cocaine bags in his stomach.
Mr. Cameron said: “He was extremely sad about the delay. He claimed that he was told in the hospital that he was lucky to survive.
“He decided that he was attacking the officer seriously.”
Jail officials were concerned about Patterson’s behavior and a hidden monitoring equipment was installed in his cell in February 2023.
Patterson was recorded while discussing the plan to attack the jail officer.
Mr. Cameron said: “Fortunately, the police intervened and in fact no attempt was made to attack the officer which was completely unknown.”
Details of the plot emerged earlier this year, when Patterson blamed two different men – Scene McGregor and Donald Stone – and other anonymous companions for supplying drugs in jail.
He ordered them to rob people of drugs, watches and money.

Lord Harowar also sentenced these two men.
Stone blamed for involvement in serious organized crime. He was jailed for five years and three months.
McGregor arranged an attack and robbery and was imprisoned for a year and three months.
He was also ordered to complete one more year and unheard time of two months from the previous sentence as he committed a crime during the license.
In 2008, Patterson was imprisoned for murder in HMP Edinburgh to shoot a person in Kambarnould.
In 2012, he was given another three years after an attempt to avoid foil.
Patterson planned to escape from custody from Shots Jail during his visit to Vishwas Hospital.
