Congress President Mallikrajun Kharge has called a meeting of floor leaders of opposition parties on August 18, expected to see the strategy for the Vice -Presidential elections with the meeting, party leaders informed the matter on Saturday.
The meeting to be held in Kharge’s parliamentary office will be held one day before the last date for filing nominations for the upcoming elections, the Congress leader said. With the discussion about the strategy for the election, opposition leaders are expected to debate the floor management for the remaining period of the monsoon session of Parliament, he said.
The election for the post of Vice President will be held on 9 September. The last date for filing nominations is 19 August, with the investigation on 22 August, the Election Commission (ECI) announced earlier this month.
Vacancy in the Vice President’s office was due to a sudden resignation by Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, dominating on the basis of health.
The HT reported on August 9 that India would choose a non-Congress candidate for block elections, trying to unite all opposition parties and maximize anti-BJP votes, including at least 11 votes of the AAM AADMI party.
Both the opposition and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have not yet announced their candidates for the elections.
According to two leaders, the opposition will not disclose its nominated person and will wait for the government to announce its candidate.
A senior Congress leader said on the condition of anonymity, “We are not in any hurry. Let the government take a step first. There is no communication with the government on this issue so far.”
