Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that the US Department of Justice is targeting it when the list of undeveloped undeveloped specified immigrants was requested by the federal government.
During a news conference on Thursday, Luna said that the federal government threatened him to charge if his agency does not cooperate.
“I have received personally, I am going to call it, threatening the letters of the federal government to ensure that we are cooperating with them, citizens are immigration enforcing,” Luna said. “Many of them say, if you don’t, you are going to have results up to the point of charging federally.”
The Department of Justice said that they have sent requests to the departments of Sheriffs across California, “For the list of all prisoners in their jails, who are not citizens of the United States, their arrest or punishment, and their prescribed release dates.”
Luna said that he had not seen the request. He said that even if he did, the Sheriff Department will not be able to help the DOJ.
“We don’t ask for the situation of immigration,” Luna said. “I don’t know how we are going to provide a list to someone, whether it is fed or someone else.”
The sanctuary laws in California and Los Angeles also prevent local law enforcement from sharing information with immigration agents until the federal government has a warrant. Luna said that federal agents received warrants for 20 disorganized people this year, but the Trump administration is requesting more data without warrant.
“At least for this year, there are 435 people who they have asked in 2025,” Luna said. “We have not completed any of them because of the state law.”
Republican said that California’s sanctuary laws are damaging public safety.
“You are not allowed to talk to ice. You are not allowed to coordinate,” rape. Kevin Kelly said. “You are not allowed to coordinate. You are not allowed to respect a detention request. Therefore, what happens that these individuals are released back into the community.”
Luna insisted that his department is not operating immigration enforcement.
“We cannot do our work without public belief in our community,” Luna said.
The Trump administration has provided access to individual information from 75 million Medicade recipients to immigration and customs enforcement agents, enabling the federal government to verify the citizenship status of all individuals. There are also home addresses in the database. Gov. Gavin Newsom said that he would fight against any attempt to reach information on people enrolled in medical, which is paid with the state’s revenue.
