Jones lifted the Welsh Cup in his first magic with Wrexham and helped Chelsea to secure the second division title in 1983-84.
He sits joint -15th in the list of Mark Hughes as well as the most capped male players for Wales.
Born in Llandudno, the Left-Back was a record of Wrexham on its first comeback at the club in 1978 and held a record in 2022 until the Ollye Palmer Stok Cae RAS was held.
Jones retired from football at the age of 37 in 1992.
A statement by Wrexham states: “Wrexham AFC is destroyed to learn about the passage of Joy Jones, who became sad in the early hours of the age of 70 after the fight with illness.”
The Championship Club announced a plan to convince Jones by commissioning the statue to be placed in a public plaza outside the Class Cop stand.
While paying tribute to X, his great friend and former Wales, Waxham and Chelsea team partner Mickey Thomas wrote on X: “This morning I lost my best friend and soul companion, Sir Joy, our memories never faded.
“Today my heart is broken. Love you Joy Rip. My condolences are with Janis and all families.”
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge said: “More tragic news people, Joy Jones died last night.
“What a cute man and an inspirational full back that gave his heart and soul in a red shirt and all the clubs he played!
“Our views are with Joy’s family! I am a lucky person who has met him many times. [You’ll Never Walk Alone] Rip the top man. ,
Noel Muni, Chief Executive Officer of Football Association of Wales (FAW), said: “Welsh ftbal was sorry to hear about the passage of Joy Jones – @wrexham_Afc @cymru legend.
An official FAW statement said: “Everyone’s views in FAW are with the family and friends of @Cymru Legend Joy Jones after today’s incredibly depressed news.”
