Chinese display manufacturer BOE is also known for the supply of OLED display for Apple iPhoneHas been in the headlines for a long time. Currently, the company has been part of an inquiry by the US Department of Defense to steal trade secrets of Samsung display, among 7 others. Although the final decision is not expected till November of this year, the report claimed that the punishment and the results have been finalized.
iPhone display manufacturer caught Samsung’s display stealing
The Korean news report highlighted that the US International Trade Commission (ITC) has issued an initial decision, where it was found to violate Article 337 of the Tariff Act using Samsung Display Trade Secrets for OLED technology. ITC said, “Despite the excellent security measures of the Samsung display, the BOE achieved and used the trade secrets of the Samsung display through misbehavior. And the Samsung performance caused great damage and serious threats.”
According to the violation rules, ITC has been ordered to issue a limited exclusion order (LeO) to BOE. Now, this decision will restrict BOE’s OLED display supply in the US for 14 years and 8 months. This time period is calculated on the basis of how much time it took for the Samsung display to introduce the core OLED technology. In addition to the ban, ITC has allegedly demanded a ban on marketing, sales, advertising and inventory sales in the US and local US subsidiaries. However, the ban may come into force during the final decision, which is expected to be announced in November.
This decision can have a significant impact on Apple as most of the iPhone display was supplied by BOE. On the other hand, Samsung displays and LG displays can have a major benefit from this decision, as leading brands including Apple will be forced to rely on both these companies for OLED display supply. So far, the existing iPhone models with BOE display will continue to sell in the US market, but future iPhone can come up with various OLED technology.
