New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought a response from the Center and the Defense Forces in a Soo Motu case on the difficulties faced by the cadets, who were medically discharged from military institutions due to disability during training programs.A bench of Justice Biwi Nagratna and R Mahadevan said that the Center should find out the possibility of giving an insurance cover to cadets passing through strict training in various military institutions to deal with any exaggeration of death or disability. The bench also asked Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to appear for the Center, who is looking for instructions to increase the 40,000 pre-pre-Greatia amount given to cadets to be disabled during the training program to meet medical expenses. The apex court also asked the Center to find out a plan for rehabilitation of these disabled candidates, such as after their treatment, desk returned to the forces such as any other work related to jobs or defense services. The bench said, “We want Brevhart to be in cadet forces. We do not want injuries or disability to be prevented for these cadets, which go through training after cleaning various competitive examinations.” It posted the case for further hearing on 4 September. The apex court registered the SUO Motu case on August 12, when a media report marked the issue of these cadets, which were once part of training in the country’s top military institutions such as National Defense Academy (NDA) and Indian Military Academy (IMA).According to media reports, there are about 500 officers cadets, which have been medically discharged from these military institutions since 1985, due to different degrees of disability during training, and now a pre–grateia have been staring at the increasing medical bills with monthly payments that they need.It is said in the NDA alone, there are about 20 such cadets that were medically discharged between 2021 and July 2025 in just five years. The media report highlighted the plight of these cadets as they are not entitled to the status of ex-servicemen (ESMs), which made them eligible under the Pre-Service-Cooperation contribution contribution (ECHS) for free treatment in military facilities and free treatment in the empire, as they were before commissioning as authorities. It had said that unlike the soldiers of this category, who are entitled to the ESM status, whatever these officers get now, the pre -Gatiya payment of up to Rs 40,000 per month is on the basis of the limit of disability – an amount that is much less than the basic needs.
