Amid displeasure over the Supreme Court’s order to remove all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh welcomed the order on Tuesday and said that the city is working towards its implementation.
Speaking to the news agency ANI, the Delhi Mayor said that the SC order – which asks Delhi to remove all stray dogs within eight weeks and the city Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram – will be implemented in the national capital in “phased methods” by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The order of the apex court was also welcomed by the Delhi government. As the BJP government vowed to make an action plan, many animal rights activists, dog lovers and other protesters were detained at India Gate for protest against SC order.
How Delhi Government has planned to remove stray dogs
Mayor Singh said that the removal of Stress would be done in a phased manner in Delhi, in which the dogs will be focused on the dogs who are infected with rabies and are prone to cutting.
“MCD has 20 operating shelter houses … In the first phase, we will choose dogs that are prone to bite or rabies-infected. Later, we will focus on other stray dogs. All this will be done with the help of non-governmental organizations. We will soon launch a helpline,” he said.
The Mayor said that a meeting with all agencies in Delhi-NCR is working to create dog-free areas and increase sterilization programs.
“CM Rekha Gupta never says for any project, and she thinks about public welfare. In shelter homes, dogs will be considered as pets,” she told ANI.

The order was given by a bench of Justices JB Pardwala and R Mahadevan, who further stated that any occupied animal would be released back to the streets.
Justice Pardiwala said, “If a person or organization comes in the way of choosing stray dogs or scoring them, we will proceed to take action against any such resistance.”
“NCT Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, MCD, and NMDC will start choosing stray dogs from all areas, especially from more weak areas.
