One of the world’s largest urban forests with more than 8 million trees on private and public land in London. But in this summer they are under extreme stress due to three heatwaves and lack of rain.
A council in London has now warned people not to sit under big trees or collect After an increase in the number of falling branches.
Harrow Council says that it has increased Sudden branch drop syndromeWhich says that it is made worse by Heatwaves.
And experts of charity tries for cities are hoping to die in trees as the climate is heated or leaving branches.
So what can be done to reduce it?
The future with London is expected to see high temperatures due to a hot climate, while trees are seen as extremely important to reduce carbon and pollution, while cool areas also.
The London mayor vowed to increase the canopy of the city tree by 10% by 2050 to combat high temperatures.
But some indigenous species are getting difficult to flourish.
The tree is a donation for cities that plant and take care of trees. We recently joined the team that waterlogged young trees in Greenford, West London.
Apple Hurst is a senior urban forest coordinator and says that the maintenance of the tree will become rapidly important.
“Obviously we do not want to leave all the native trees that we have in the UK. They support a lot of local wildlife and the species from other places will not support the same wildlife.
“So there is a mixture to ensure that the native species we are taking care of, but also to choose the same species, which is more customized for the changing climate. So for example taking an oak from southern France that we are predicting here.”
He says that “Maintenance is also super important. London has very small tree pits for example, perhaps we can have big tree pits? We have soil. How can we overdose the soil.
“Now we are looking at climate change, so we have to change how we take care of trees.”
Mete Coban is the deputy mayor for the environment for London. He says that climate change is now affecting London.
“We know that heatwave species and trees are greatly affected.
“What we need to do continues to roll more trees so that we can be more flexible for the effects of excessive heat and climate change.
“But also what we need to do, get the right type of trees and species and make sure that we have the right infrastructure to protect our trees because we are finally going to see as much warm temperatures in our city.”
Georgie is a senior urban forest coordinator in the charity tries for power cities.
She was participating in work in Greenford, giving water to trees and adding wet grass around the roots to help maintain moisture.
She believes that with rising temperature we can expect to see more trees under stress.
“We feel that there is a sudden branch drop syndrome, when trees are placed under excessive heat and drought, it is similar to self-ange. So trees are not getting enough water in branches and they are cutting branches to preserve the rest of the tree.
“We can see from this heat – April, May, June – they are completely roasting in this summer. All trees are under pressure.”
Georgie says: “We know that with climate change we are going to achieve higher temperatures higher, because we are going to get more things like dying of trees, but also suddenly branch drop syndrome.
“We have to choose already different species with climate change. A good example is with an alder tree. At the moment, trees are planting too much of Italian alder for cities as it is more climate flexible and is more flexible for drought and floods unlike common and common alder.
“So we are already picking up trees which are going to be better favorable for our climate in a very near future.”
