While the dust storms are common in Arizona during the monsoon season, they can strike on a moment notice. Monday’s dust wall occurred late afternoon and in the evening before the rain.
A National Weather Service Dust Storm Warning was effective for the valley till 5:45 pm local time.

Any person driving during the dust storm is urged by the authorities to pull away from the road, put their vehicles in the park, stop their lights and keep their legs away from the brake so that other drivers do not follow them.

Phoenix has been drought more than normal during the monsoon season, while parts of South-East and North-Central Arizona have received a proper amount of rainfall, with the national weather service in Phoenix, Meteorologist Mark O’Mali told AP.
“But it is specific to a monsoon, very hit and miss,” he said.

The forecast for the metro phoenix on Tuesday asks 40% of the rainfall on Tuesday before drying up, O’Mali said.
