What you should know about a violation of cancer care
As per the notice filed with the state regulators and the US Health and Human Services Department, the violation of the three -day period between 13 and 16, 2024 allowed the attackers to reach employees email and sharepoint accounts.

The accounts compromised included names, addresses, birth dates, diagnosis, laboratory results, treatment details, medicines, insurance information, and in some cases, protected health information including social security numbers and financial data. While ion says there is no current evidence of misuse, the company has offered free credit monitoring, dark web monitoring and identity theft security services to the affected individuals.
On June 13, 2025, violations for the affected practices were sent, and patients started mailing on 27 June.
Investigators say the phishing campaign was designed to harvest data for use in comprehensive fraud schemes. While Sharepoint Access was also compromised, the primary focus appears to be for email-based data collection. Ion says it has updated its cyber security protocol and provided additional training to employees.

What practices are affected by breech
So far, at least 11 practices have reported to be affected by violations. The eldest includes:
- Rocky Mountain Oncology Care: 10,268 persons
- E+ Oncologics Louisiana, LLC: 8,270
- California Cancer Associates – Fresno: 7,670
- Mojave Radiation Oncology Medical Group: 4,403
- South Georgia Center for Cancer Care: 4,108
- Tulsi Pet Imaging: 3,159
- Acadiana radiation therapy, llc: 2,219
- Dallas Pet Imaging of Northeast: 1,935
Other affected practices include imaging and radiation centers in Texas, Louisiana and North Florida. Overall, more than 130,000 individuals have been affected so far. Breach is now listed on the HHS Office for Civil Rights Brech portal, which tracks the healthcare data exposure involving more than 500 persons.

6 ways to protect yourself from cancer care breech
The recent fishing attack on ion-conferred cancer centers highlighted the information of sensitive patients including contact details, medical records and even social security numbers in some cases. If you are affected or just want to be a step ahead, these tasks can help reduce your risk.
1) Do not click on suspected link or attachment and use strong antivirus software

Since your contact details may be exposed to ion breeches, you are more unsafe for spam, scams and targeted frauds. Consider using a personal data removal service to scrub your name, email, phone number and address from data broker websites selling your information.

3) Use strong, unique password for every account
Reusing the password increases your risk. A single leak password can unlock many accounts. Use a password manager to generate and store safe passwords.

4) Sign up for an identity theft protection service
Offer free identity theft and credit monitoring services to people affected by ion violations. But even if you were not affected by this specific violation, it is smart to protect itself. Identity Safety Services can alert you to suspicious activity, if your identity is stolen, it helps you to recover, and often provide equipment to freeze or lock your credit. This prevents fraudsters from opening new accounts in your name, and you can temporarily pick up freeze if needed.

5) Enable two-factor authentication (2fa)
Adding a second layer of login security through a text message or app-based code 2faIon can make it very difficult for attackers to reach your accounts, even if your password is revealed.
6) Monitor your credit and financial accounts
Keep an eye on strange fees or unfamiliar accounts. Set the alert through your bank and review your credit report regularly to catch fraud quickly.
