A city councilor says that his wife’s happiness is more important when he stepped down to allow her to enter an annual flower show.
Tony Hewitt lives with his wife Rita for seven years in Ferryhill, County Durham and said that he is happy to enter the annual ferhill in the bloom competition.
She was appointed to the Ferryhill Town Council on 1 May, representing the reform UK, but as she judged the competition when she decided to resign when it became clear that she could not compete after “hard work” throughout the year.
Mr. Hewitt said that some people challenged her on her decision but replied: “She loves her garden.”
Last year, the couple came first in the competition for their front garden and second for the second.
Mr. Hewitt said: “I do not have much with the garden, it is doing my wife.
“She grows plants from seeds and brings them to a greenhouse – this is her child.”
The 65 -year -old said that he applied to join the city council to “do something for the community”. He is already the chairman of the Residents Association.
He said, “There were not enough applicants to make an election, I was appointed just.”
“There are 17 councilors for the Pherihil Town Council and currently only seven councilors.”
Mr. Hewitt was in post for only one month and would not be able to compete his wife, 77, before attending a meeting. He stood on 26 June.
“When I came to know that this year she would not carry herself forward after all her hard work, I felt that I am not really losing anything without getting my feet under the table.”
Mr. Hewitt said that he fully understands the situation and said that if “the councilor or a councilor’s wife wins the competition, people can see it and think what is going on”.
The Bloom 2025 will announce the results of the ferhills in September.
