Bolton was first estimated as a potential pick to serve as Trump’s State Secretary in December 2016, when Trump was preparing for his first inauguration after his upset over Hillary Clinton in the election that year. The pundits postponed Bolton as a veteran foreign policy’s hawk, which could increase Trump’s diplomatic agenda, and conservative outlets such as the Editorial Board of National Review inspired the Trump Transition Team to choose Bolton, identifying them as “Hard-Had Realists, which is always a national interest.”

The pair gained a common base on issues such as withdrawing the US from the joint comprehensive action plan, otherwise the Iran is known as a nuclear deal, which was an Obama-eager compromise with other world powers to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Trump eventually dropped the US from the agreement in 2018, slammed it as a “terrible unilateral deal, never, never,” and was supported by his Hawkish group of foreign policy advisors, such as Bolton and the then kingdom Mike Pompeo.
Bolton’s relationship with Trump began to be sour as he advanced hard-line strategies towards American opponents including Iran and North Korea. He had long advocated the regime in Tehran, although he later clarified in his role as the National Security Advisor that the US policy was “not a change”, but a shock for “large -scale changes in the behavior of governance”. Trump, on the contrary, initially favored a more diplomatic route, urging that the flaws seen in the Iran nuclear deal should eventually be revalved before deciding to withdraw from the agreement.

“John Bolton is absolutely a hawk. If it was above him, he will take the whole world at a time, okay?” Trump said about Bolton in June 2019, underlining bubbling tension between the two on foreign policy.
In April 2018, Bolton suggested North Korea to follow the example of Libya’s nuclearization, which he called the “Libya model”, and in 2003 included his nuclear weapons country in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. Bolton’s comments about such a model for North Korea condemned in Pyongyang as they expressed concern that this would change the potential governance.
Trump cited the comment after Bolton’s sudden exit from the White House in September 2019.
“When John Bolton talked about Libya’s model, we came back very badly,” Trump told reporters at the time.
Prior to Bolton’s expulsion, Trump was slated to meet the Taliban leaders in an attempt to negotiate peace in Afghanistan, but the meeting never took place and Bolton allegedly slammed such an attempt in a conversation with Trump, the media outlets said at that time.
