Notorious Mexican Drug Lord Jokin “El Chapo” son of Gujman pleaded guilty Charges of federal narcotics smuggling on Friday at a hearing in Chicago.
Prosecutors accused Ovidio Gujman Lopez, with their brother Jokin Guzman Lopez, a faction of Cartel is known as “Los Chapitos,” or “Little Chapos”. As part of his petition, Ovidio Guzman Lopez admitted to oversee a major Phantanel Trafficking Operation, stating that prosecutors described the “stimulating” amount of synthetic opioid in the United States.
Los Chapitos and his Cartel Associates have allegedly used corkkruz, electrocution, and hot chicks to torture their rivals, while some of their victims were “dead or alive” according to the “2023 US prosecution”.
Wearing an orange jumpsuit and using an interpreter for headphones and translation, Guzman Lopez on Friday convicted four of the most serious allegations against him; Two cases of drug conspiracy and two cases of deliberate engagement in a continuous criminal enterprise, allegations filed in the federal court in Chicago and New York.
He faced life in jail, but how much he actually gets in punishment, will depend on their cooperation with federal authorities.
The judge said that Gujman Lopez should cooperate and the government should provide “adequate assistance” to fulfill its petition agreement. If the government indicates that it has provided adequate assistance, the judge will accommodate the recommendations of life sentence less than life in jail.
Irv Miller, a legal analyst of CBS News Chicago, said, “It is only after the government is satisfied and he can be beneficial and whether he has become a colleague witness and associate defendant.”
The judge repeatedly reminded Guzman Lopez in the court that the government had discretion on whether he has helped enough, and she maintains the only discretion on her final punishment. He also agreed to the government as part of his petition deal of $ 80 million in assets and other assets.
As part of his petition deal, Gujman Lopez-the first of the brothers to be guilty-may have to share intimate details about the role of his family in smuggling drugs on the US-Maxico border, probably involving testifying against one of his brothers who are still waiting for testing.
“Not only his own brother, but also other relatives who can already be charged or not,” Miller said. “Many perhaps have not been charged yet, and I think there are many people, when they hear what has happened today, they are going to be very careful what they talk to and what they do, because some government officials or police officers can knock on their door in the near future.”
The judge set his next hearing for six months from now, the point at which he will probably determine a formal punishment date for Gujman Lopez.
His lawyer, Jeffrey Lichman, refused to say why his client decided to convict his petition.
“You have to ask him. This is his decision between him and me, and I am not clearly not going to talk about any privileged conversation,” Lichman said.
Guzman Lopez’s decision to change his petition seems like a win for something, including Michael Gainon, a former assistant special agent in -charge for US drug enforcement administration.
“It immediately thinks of me in a terrible way, that he was on so many families that lose loved ones due to Phantenile poisoning. And it is a person who was responsible for the manufacture of tens of millions of fennel pills that were flooded only in the United States,” he said.
Gujman Lopez’s father, Jokin “L Chapo”, is currently serving life imprisonment in the US federal prison after the 2019 sentence. After L Chapo’s capture, Gujman Lopez and his brothers -in -law allegedly played a major leadership role within the cartel.
Guzman Lopez was arrested by Mexican authorities in early 2023 and was extradited in the US months later. He originally requested not to be guilty of drug smuggling, money laundering and allegations of firearms.
His brother, Jokin Gujman Lopez, and a long -time cartel leader Ismail “L. Mayo” Zamba was arrested in 2024 in Texas after arriving on a private plane. Both men have requested not to be guilty for several allegations. His high-profile capture set a wave of violence in Cinaloa as rival groups scrambled for control.
