President Draupadi Murmu said on Monday that she would try to learn Kannada, emphasizing the importance of preserving various languages, cultures and traditions of India.
Addressing the Diamond Jubilee festival in Marsuru, Murmu said, “I would like to tell the honorable Chief Minister that Kannada is not my mother tongue, but I cherish all the languages, cultures and traditions of my country deeply. I have a lot of respect and relations for each of them.”
The news agency PTI said that his comment came in response to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who spoke in Kannada and asked the dignitaries whether they understand the language.
Murmu called upon everyone to actively preserve his languages, traditions and cultural heritage.
He said, “I want everyone to keep their language alive, preserve their traditions and culture, and moves in that direction. I give my best wishes for this. And I will definitely try to learn Kannada,”
President Murmu first landed at the first Mesuru airport, where he was welcomed by Karnataka Governor Thavarchand Gehlot and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Diamond Jubilee also saw the presence of prominent leaders including Union Minister Anupriya Patel, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and BJP MP Yaduvir Vadiyar.
By opening his address in Kannada, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah looked at the President with a smile and asked, “Do you know Kannada?”
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah exchanged months after emphasizing that “everyone living in this state should learn to speak Kannada,” that we are all Kannadig. “We are all Kannadig. Different languages ​​have settled here, and all living in this state should learn Kannada,” reported by NDTV.
His remarks gave rise to protests by opposition parties and leaders. During his previous term, Siddaramaiah advocated the widespread use of Kannada language.
