Wimbledon Champion IGA Swiatek became the latest seed to fall into the Canadian Open as it suffered a surprising defeat by Clara Tusson in the fourth round.
Denmark’s Tusson finished 19th, with a 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 win over the second seed in Montreal, avenged Swiyatech in Wimbledon last month for the loss of his fourth round.
The exit of Swiytech comes after the top seed Coco Goff, the two -time defending champion Jessica Peguula and the fourth seed Mirra Andreva were all dropped.
“Obviously it is really very good and shows that whatever hard work I am is,” Touson said, who won his third WTA title in January – his first since 2021.
“I am getting more confidence at this type of level and it seems that I am a little more here. I think really helped me in important points today.”
Tausan faced the Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the quarter-finals, when the American saved two match points to win 4-6 6-3 7-5 over Czech Karolina Muchova.
Earlier on Sunday, four-time prominent winner Naomi Osaka lost only one game, as he left the 6–1 6–0 victory in 49 minutes to Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
Japan’s Osaka, a winner twice in the US and Australian Open, has been seeking its first title since returning from maternity leave in early 2024.
