Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that Canada has planned to recognize a Palestinian state in September, which has become the third G7 nation to make such an announcement in recent times.
Carney said that such a step would depend on democratic reforms, in which the Palestinian Authority held elections next year without Hamas.
His comment will recognize a Palestinian kingdom in September a day after the UK was announced until Israel agreed to a ceasefire and other situations and a week after France’s uniform announcement.
Most countries – About 150 out of 193 member states of the United Nations – formally recognize a Palestinian state.
Carney cited the expansion of Israeli settlements at the West Bank occupied, as a human situation in Gaza deteriorating, and on 7 October 2023 due to the dramatic change in Canada’s foreign policy due to attacks on Israel by Hamas on Israel.
He told in Wednesday’s news conference: “The level of human pain in Gaza is unbearable and it is deteriorating rapidly.”
He said that a recognition of the Palestinian state would be on commitments by the Palestinian Authority to improve its rule in 2026, to hold general elections in 2026 in 2026 and to thwart the region.
He said that Canada had long been committed to a two-state solution as part of the peace process of a conversation, but said “this approach is no longer”.
“The possibility of a Palestinian kingdom is being erased before our eyes,” he said.
Carney said that he had spoken to the first Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmood Abbas about the announcement on Wednesday.
After the UK and France, the Prime Minister has been under pressure in recent times to address the Palestinian kingdom, after Canada’s close colleagues – came out with their own statements on the issue.
About 200 former Canadian ambassadors and diplomats on Tuesday called Carney to identify a Palestinian state and signed a letter.
A letter shared with Canadian media outlets on Wednesday said that Israeli works in West Bank and Gaza violated Canada’s interests and values.
Canada’s principles said, “Gaza is being abandoned daily with large -scale displacement, indiscriminate bombing and starvation of Palestinian citizens in Gaza and violent attacks by extremist settlers in the West Bank”.
The recognition of a Palestinian kingdom, the letter stated, “not only will the Palestinians strengthen our long -standing commitment to self -determination, but will also have our total rejection of any attempt to displace or expel Palestinians”.
