On Monday, the Supreme Court of Brazil ordered former President Zaar Bolsonro to be placed under the House arrest amidst the legal proceedings on its alleged attempt to reverse the 2022 presidential election results.
The case has caught the nation since its inception in 2023 and intensified the international investigation, especially under the recently sanctioned Supreme Court’s right to justice by the Trump administration in the United States.
Justice Alexandre de Morace, who is overseeing the case, accused 70 -year -old Bolsoro of violating the restrictions imposed by the court.
The ruling, first reported by Associated Press, Bolsonro used a Sunday opposition in Rio de Janeiro to publicly address the supporters by using a cellphone owned by one of their three sons, all of which are legalists.

Bolsono’s brief message, “Good afternoon, Kopakbana, Good afternoon Mai Brazil, embrace everyone, this is for our freedom,” was considered a violation of their release terms.
Bolsonro’s legal team announced a plan to appeal, arguing that the statement was symbolic, not criminal, and did not justify additional restrictions.
Growing international results
Political stakes are now well increased beyond Brazil. The case triggered backlash from President Trump, Bolsonaro colleague for a long time, who tied the new American tariff on Brazil’s imports, called a “Witch Hunt”. His remarks have further stressed delicate diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In an alleged statement on X, the Bureau of Western Hemisphere of the US State Department condemned the Brazilian court functions, wrote: “Jer Bolsono has a public service, putting even more restrictions on the ability to publicly protect themselves. Let it be a public service. Let the Bolsoro speak!”

The bureau also warned that individuals described as “approved behavior” would be included.
The statement led to a sharp increase, especially on the heels of sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department, under the administration of Trump, against Justice D Mores. He was named a “US-approved human rights” and accused the judiciary of making weapons to silence political opponents.
Base for restrictions
Treasury Secretary Scott Besent accused De Morace leading an illegal crack:
“Alexandre de Mores has taken himself to be a judge and jury in an illegal witch hunting against citizens and companies in the US and Brazil. He is responsible for the sensorship, arbitrary detects, and the oppressive campaign of political prosecutors – including former President Jair Bolsono,” said Besent.

These sanctions were imposed under the Executive Order 13818, which was released during Trump’s first term in 2017. The order declared a national emergency about the violations and corruption of global human rights and expanded the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act passed in 2016. The law empowers the US government to impose financial and travel restrictions on foreign officials on charges of violation of human rights.
Despite increasing international pressure, the Brazilian government has not yet released a formal reaction.
Case details
The Brazilian prosecutors allege that Bolsonaro led a coordinated attempt to delete, and eventually overturned the results of the 2022 election, including plans violent acts and even an alleged murder conspiracy, which targets President Luiz Ininoic Lula Da Silva and Juastis De Mores. Bolsono lost the election with a narrow margin.
A panel of Supreme Court Justice accepted the allegations in March, eventually ordered Bolsoro to commit litigation. Monday’s house arrest ruling built on earlier sanctions: monitoring an ankle, one night curfew, and a travel restriction, limiting the former President to Brasilia despite his deep political roots at Rio de Janeiro.

A former army captain and deep polarization figure, Bolsono now joined a small but resulting list of former Brazilian presidents since returning to the country’s democracy in 1985, a system that he has often criticized and was associated with military dictatorship.
Justice de Mores defended the court’s verdict and wrote, “The judiciary will not allow itself not to joke. Justice applies equally to all. A defendant who intentionally violates precautionary measures – especially the second time – to face legal consequences.”
